Scripture: Philemon 17-19

What does faithfulness to Jesus require when a relationship has been broken by hurt, betrayal, or sin?

In this message from Philemon 17–19, we consider the difficult but necessary work of Christian reconciliation. Scripture does not call us simply to “forgive and forget,” nor does reconciliation mean pretending that wrongdoing never happened. Instead, biblical reconciliation begins with our shared identity in Christ, deals honestly with the wrong that has been done, recognizes that rebuilding trust can take time, and requires a willingness to bear the cost of pursuing peace.

Paul’s appeal for Philemon to receive Onesimus ultimately points us to a much greater reality: Christians pursue reconciliation because we ourselves have been reconciled to God. At the cross, Christ did not overlook our sin—He bore its cost.

Because Christ is our Reconciler, His grace changes the way we respond when relationships are broken.
